Brookwoods Group CEO John Sweney presented Houston Mayor Annise Parker with the PRSA Houston 2012 CEO Communicator of the Year Award at the PRSA Excalibur Awards on June 28.
Here is the full text of the presentation:
Being an elected official these days isn’t the easiest job. Since becoming mayor, Annise Parker has had to make some difficult choices to streamline city government, cut waste, and improve performance. But in her no-nonsense leadership style, she forges reasonable consensus in a manner that allows most constituents to feel sufficiently represented and heard. That’s the hallmark of a great communicator.
For example, Mayor Parker supported a citizen petition called Rebuild Houston to help address our persistent street flooding problems with a drainage fee proposal on the ballot. She was the public face of the campaign in 2010 -- a tumultuous year for politicians. That November, the voters approved it and the Mayor went straight to work to create and implement a plan. PRSA Houston recognized the significance of this campaign and featured it at PR Day last year.
Mayor Parker’s accolades have been many… She is among Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2010…
She is most recently recognized for City Gardens, her innovative demonstration of easy vegetable gardening, in First Lady Michelle Obama’s new book, American Grown.
But tonight, PRSA Houston is pleased to recognize the Honorable Mayor Annise Parker as our CEO Communicator of the Year.
Congratulations Mayor Parker!
