Do Not Overlook Baby Boomers

As a baby boomer myself and an experienced recruiting manager at a staffing and recruiting firm, I can certainly attest to the notion that Baby Boomers are a functioning viable workforce. So don’t give up on their valuable knowledge and experience. At one time the “seasoned” professional was viewed as the big catch, the person to target and recruit. In today’s fast-paced world, age and experience has lost it reverence. With almost 29% of the workforce still baby boomers and many of whom are underemployed or unemployed, it is time to look at reasons you want to hire them or keep them on your teams.

A recent article by Erin Engstrom in Glassdoor for Employers, https://tinyurl.com/zgrgvho. There are 6 reason listed Not to Overlook Baby Boomers.

  1. Experience
  2. Leadership
  3. A different perspective
  4. Credibility
  5. Interpersonal Skills
  6. Adaptability

I would add –

  1. Dependability; older workers know how important it is to put in a good day’s work. A Baby boomer is more likely to put in the extra time to get a project completed.
  2. They are also at an age where civic responsibility is important and they get involved.
  3. Diversity in your workforce; since so much of what a company does has to apply to all age groups, it is important to have all age groups on your team.
  4. Most Baby-boomers didn’t have technology in their earlier years, but I haven’t seen a baby boomer without a cell phone in a long time - we do embrace technology.
